Best Video Games To Play When Snowed In

Growing up in the mid-west, I loved snow days. Waking up to the silent snow-covered world, watching the news to see if your school was calling or a snow day, there was no better feeling for a kid. Once I would see my schools name scroll across the news screen I would scream with delight and run back to my room! I knew what a snow day really meant; it meant a game day! Okay, sure, I would also spend time building snowmen and going sledding but my favorite thing to do on a snow day was work through my back catalogue of games and see how many I could get through before the thaw. I would spend hours in my room, my mom serving me my food like an inmate serving time in the world’s greatest prison. Some things stick with you as you grow up and the feeling I get when I look outside and see the world is covered in a think powered blanket of white snow, is the same I got as a kid. I may not have a school I am hoping will be closed on those days, but when I am able to get away with it, I treat snow days the same way. Locking yourself away in your room and playing some video games while snowed in is a great feeling and here are our picks for our favorite games to play in this situation.

BEST GAME WITH SNOW IN IT-Diablo 3

This may seem like a strange pick for “Best Game with Snow” but we are talking about the best game with snow in it, to play while you are snowed in. I am sure most people do not think of snow when they think of Diablo, it’s more of the fire and brimstone levels that come to mind, but Diablo 3 actually has some very unique snow levels in it. The main reason I feel this is a great snow day pick is the hours and hours you can invest in the game without feeling overwhelmed or bogged down. Diablo 3 does a fantastic job of forcing the player to grind without making it seem like such a chore.

BEST ONLINE MULTIPLAYER GAME-RED DEAD ONLINE

Rockstar games is no slouch when it comes to building a unique and beautiful world that beckons players to come live inside it. After Red Dead Online was announced and released on November 27th in 2018, gamers jumped at the opportunity to play out their fantasies in the old west created by Rockstar. With the ability to start up you own posse, go on missions together or just hunt and fish with your friends online, this is a perfect game to stay social while you are snowed in. One of my favorite things to do in this game while snowed in is travel to the mountains and hunt for dangerous animals. The excitement mixed with gorgeous scenery creates an amazing escape!

BEST OPEN WORLD GAME-SKYRIM

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may not be your favorite open world game but for snow days, this is our favorite world to jump into and get that snowy feeling, without all the cold and clean up. Skyrim was first released in 2011 on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 however now it has been updated for the current generation of consoles including the Nintendo Switch. The exploration of the snow-covered mountains in this game is not only a lot of fun, but super beautiful. Skyrim is one of those games where you can keep coming back to it time and time again to play through the story line more than once, or just keep working through side missions until you one hundred percent the game. There is a reason why I own this game on every console I possibly can.

BEST SPORTS GAME– SSX COLLECTION

How can you go snowboarding without leaving the warm comfort of your own bed? Grab any of the SSX games and fling yourself downhill for a thrill ride without the freezer burn! SSX was originally released on the PlayStation 2 in October of 2000 and was developed by EA Canada. Who better to create one of the most iconic snowboarding games than the Canadians? After the games release it was so well received that it was given five awards including, “Console Sports Game of the Year”.  With the great success of this game, it was a no brainer to keep pumping out sequels, the best one in my opinion being SSX Tricky being released just one year after the first in the series. The last entry in the series so far was in 2012 however there has been some rumblings of a new game coming out on the next generation of consoles. Until then, grab any of these great games in the series and have a blast on your snow day.

BEST RETRO GAME-SUPER MARIO 64

I know that technically we have already had a retro game on the list, but that was sports, and this is another category we let’s just roll with the snowballs, shall we? Super Mario 64 is one of those games that can give you the most joy and pain in the same sitting. A complete change from the previous games in the series, Mario 64 was released in 1996 on the Nintendo 64 console and blew people away all around the world. This was the first Mario game with open world capability and the freedom to move the camera around to multiple angles. Not only is this a remarkably fun game to play but guess what it has from the very beginning of the game, a snow level! Help some lost penguins or race a snowball, this is one of the most fun and most nostalgic snow levels in any game you can play today. Speaking of playing today, Nintendo just released a new 3D Allstars collection for the switch that includes Super Mario 64! The collection also comes with Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, both super fun games to play…but let’s stick with the 64 for our snow day.

Pour yourself some hot chocolate, make your favorite snack food and cuddle up on the couch with these fantastic games while snowed in, and you are sure to have one of the best snow days in history!
